Sector 11 – Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting

The Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and Hunting sector comprises establishments primarily engaged in growing crops, raising animals, harvesting timber, and harvesting fish and other animals from a farm, ranch, or their natural habitats.

The establishments within this sector are commonly referred to as farms, ranches, dairies, greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, or hatcheries. A farm can consist of either a single tract of land or multiple separate tracts, which may be held under different tenures. For instance, one tract may be owned by the farm operator while another is rented. The operation of the farm can be carried out solely by the operator, with the assistance of household members or hired employees, or through a partnership, corporation, or other types of organizations. In cases where a landowner has one or more tenants, renters, croppers, or managers, each piece of land operated by them is considered a farm.

This sector can be classified into two fundamental activities: agricultural production and agricultural support activities. Agricultural production encompasses establishments that undertake all aspects of the farm or ranch operation, such as farm owner-operators and tenant farm operators. On the other hand, agricultural support activities involve establishments that perform one or more activities associated with farm operation, including soil preparation, planting, harvesting, and management, on a contractual or fee basis.
